Paper Phone (纸手机) is a five-minute AI-generated short film from WAI studio in Shenzhen, directed by Li Ting and written by Yang Xuan, both from the Chaoshan region. Released on 31 March 2026, just before Qingming, it shows a small boy trying to buy a paper phone to call his late grandmother. Nearly every shot was made with Kling AI. It can be watched on Bilibili - WAI-你听 and in the Kling AI showcase. People search for it after seeing it shared as the most human AI film.

| Platform | Type | Cost | Link | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kling AI showcase | Website | Free | Open | Featured as 'AI Narrative Short Film: Paper Phone' on Kling's site |
| Bilibili - WAI-你听 | Other platform | Free | In the app only | Original upload by the studio's Bilibili account |
The studio's own upload is on Bilibili - WAI-你听. Open the Bilibili app or bilibili.com, search 纸手机 or the account name WAI-你听, and play it free; we could not capture a direct link. Bilibili works in a browser without an account for most videos, and the app is listed in international app stores. The audio is Mandarin without confirmed English subtitles, though the story needs very few words.
The Kling AI showcase at kling.ai features Paper Phone under AI Narrative Short Film, which plays in any browser and is the easiest route outside China. There is no studio upload on YouTube, so anything there is a re-post. No region locks are known for either source. At five minutes, data use is trivial even at full quality, so there is no need to lower the resolution on a phone.
About Paper Phone
A boy walks into a funeral-goods shop with fifteen yuan. He wants a paper phone, the kind burned as an offering, so that he can ring his grandmother who has died. The shopkeeper laughs it off at first. Then he thinks again and runs after the child, phone in hand. That is the whole story, and the film trusts those few minutes to land.
Paper Phone runs about five minutes and was made in three days. Kling AI, Kuaishou's video model, produced nearly all the footage; the paper phone prop itself was the only hand-drawn, live-shot element, a detail the makers point to as the film's heart. The setting is Chaoshan, a Teochew-speaking area of Guangdong, and the dialogue is Mandarin. CCTV's Focus Interview cited it as an example of AI used for human stories, and WAI studio posts it on its Bilibili account.

Why it is popular
Timing explains much of it. Released just before Qingming, when Chinese families honour the dead, Paper Phone hit 10 million views in two days and more than 40 million by 1 April 2026 according to HK01 and Sina. Kling and ifanr later cited 100 million-plus views across platforms, and 36Kr's first-half 2026 roundup gave 230 million including reposts by CCTV News and People's Daily. Those totals are aggregated by platforms and cannot be checked independently. The audience is Chinese-speaking, mainly in mainland China; as of 26 October 2026 a YouTube re-upload not from the studio has only 8,205 views, which shows how little of the wave reached English speakers.
Popularity snapshot as of 26 October 2026: 10M+ views in two days and 40M+ by 2026-04-01 (HK01, Sina); 100M+ across platforms (Kling, ifanr); 230M views and reposts by CCTV News and People's Daily (36Kr H1 2026 roundup); unofficial YouTube re-upload 8,205 views (2026-10-26)
How to watch Paper Phone safely
A tearjerker this widely shared attracts copies, and some are wrapped in download-in-4K pages that push fake apps or ask for a phone number and a one-time code. Paper Phone is free from the studio and from Kling; never pay for it, never install anything to view it, and never type an OTP on a download page. If you see a re-upload that claims to be the maker, report it so WAI studio gets the credit.
- Install apps only from the Play Store or the App Store, and check that the developer name matches the maker’s website.
- No real source asks for your card details, a one-time code or a “human verification” step before a free episode plays.
- Copies on random channels are often cut, watermarked or wrongly labelled; prefer the links on this page.
- On a phone, use a data saver or a lower quality setting if the episodes buffer, and report scams to 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in in India.
Questions people ask
Where can I watch Paper Phone?
On Bilibili - WAI-你听, the Shenzhen studio's own account, by searching 纸手机 in the Bilibili app or on bilibili.com, and in the Kling AI showcase at kling.ai, where it is featured as an AI narrative short film. There is no upload from the makers on YouTube; copies there are re-posts.
Is Paper Phone free?
Yes. It is free to watch on Bilibili and on the Kling AI site, and it was never sold or put behind a paywall. A page asking for payment, registration or an app install to see it is not connected to WAI studio or Kling and should be treated as a scam.
How many episodes does Paper Phone have?
None in the series sense: it is a single short film of about five minutes. It is a complete story about a boy, a funeral-goods shopkeeper and a paper phone meant for his late grandmother. No sequel or series has been announced by the studio as of October 2026.
Is Paper Phone made by AI?
Almost entirely. Director Li Ting and writer Yang Xuan generated nearly all the footage with Kling AI, Kuaishou's video model, in about three days. The one exception is the paper phone prop, which was hand-drawn and filmed for real. The script, performances direction and editing came from the WAI studio team.
Is Paper Phone available in India and in English?
The film can be opened from India via bilibili.com or the Kling AI showcase, neither of which is known to block the country. The dialogue is Mandarin and English subtitles are not confirmed, but there is very little talking and the story is clear from the images. No English-language release has been announced.
